An intercom (or "door entry system", as it's often called in commercial settings) lets the people inside a building see and speak to a visitor at the door, then release the latch remotely. The simplest version is a single-button audio handset. The most sophisticated is an IP video intercom with mobile-app answer, integrated access control, and a wide-angle outdoor camera that captures every visitor whether you answer or not.

IP intercoms (running on Cat-6 with PoE) suit new installs and offer mobile-app answer; 2-wire systems can re-use existing intercom cabling for retrofits without re-wiring. Ask which is being proposed and why.
UK weather is unkind to outdoor stations. Look for IP65 or higher with a vandal-resistance rating (IK-08 minimum) for any panel that's reachable from public areas.
Most modern systems let residents answer the door from a phone. That's handy for working-from-home, deliveries, and people who travel. Confirm whether each user gets their own credential and how lost-phone recovery works.
An intercom usually controls a strike or mag-lock. The lock has to behave correctly during a power cut and on a fire-alarm signal. The same considerations apply as for Access Control, and the installer should specify and document this.
A narrow lens means visitors who step back from the door disappear from view. A wide-angle (160°+) lens is now standard on better units. Ask the installer to demonstrate the framing during commissioning.

Often yes. Hikvision's 2-wire range can run on the existing pair of wires used by older analogue door-entry systems, which means you can usually upgrade to video intercom without lifting floors. The installer will check the wiring during the survey and confirm whether 2-wire is feasible. If not, IP/PoE is the alternative and may need new cabling.
Wired (PoE or 2-wire) is far more reliable for any system that's genuinely security-critical. Wi-Fi intercoms suit retrofits where running a cable is impossible, but the audio/video quality depends on Wi-Fi signal at the outdoor location, which is often weak. For a single residential front door, Wi-Fi can be acceptable; for blocks of flats, always wired.
Yes. That's one of the main reasons to specify a modern IP intercom. Each apartment gets its own credential, can answer from any of their devices, and tenants can be added or removed by the building manager without re-wiring or re-coding the panel.
IP65 is the realistic minimum for the UK. That covers driven rain and dust ingress. For exposed coastal locations, prefer IP66 plus a recessed mounting box. The installer should also specify the vandal-resistance class: IK-08 or IK-10 for anything in public areas.
It can. Many installers fit intercom and access control as a single integrated system so that the intercom panel becomes one of several ways to release a door, and visitors can be issued time-limited credentials from reception. If you have or are planning access control, mention it before the survey.
